Gums bleeding is not normal

Bleeding gums are one of the most common concerns patients face. Many people consider it normal, but healthy gums generally do not bleed during brushing or flossing.

The most common cause is the build up of bacterial plaque along the gumline. If this plaque is not removed regularly, it can lead to gum inflammation, known as gingivitis. Without treatment, the inflammation may gradually spread to the deeper supporting tissues around the teeth and lead to periodontal disease, one of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults.

Patients often ask me whether they should stop cleaning a sensitive area because it bleeds. My answer is always the same: no. Although it can be uncomfortable, consistent and gentle oral hygiene is essential to calming the inflammation. If we stop brushing, bacterial plaque accumulates even faster and the inflammation only becomes more severe.

For sensitive and bleeding gums, I recommend using a soft toothbrush, following the correct brushing technique and cleaning between the teeth every day with dental floss or an appropriately sized interdental brush. Where needed, treatment can also be supported with antiseptic mouthwashes, but their use should always be tailored to the individual and limited in duration.

If bleeding does not settle within a few days despite careful oral hygiene, or if it continues for a longer period, I recommend an examination by a dentist or dental hygienist. The cause is often tartar, which cannot be removed at home and requires professional cleaning.

Healthy gums are the foundation of healthy teeth. This is why preventive examinations assess not only the teeth, but also the condition of the supporting tissues around them. By identifying problems early, we can successfully slow down or even prevent the development of disease.
