Be mindful of sweets and acidic drinks
One of the most common causes of tooth decay is diet. Bacteria that are naturally present in the mouth use sugars from food and drinks as nourishment. This produces acids that gradually dissolve tooth enamel. If these acid attacks occur too frequently, the tooth does not have enough time to recover and the risk of tooth decay increases.
Many people think first of chocolate or sweets, but sugars are not found only in confectionery. They are also present in fruit juices, honey, dried fruit, fizzy drinks, sports drinks and many foods that we often perceive as healthy choices. Completely avoiding sugar is therefore not the answer. What matters far more is how and how often we consume it.
I therefore always recommend a few simple habits that can make a real difference.
- Choose sweets after a main meal rather than several times throughout the day Every time we eat something sweet, an acidic environment is created in the mouth again. If we reach for small snacks throughout the day, teeth are exposed to acids almost continuously. It is much kinder to teeth to enjoy dessert once, after a meal.
- Natural fruit juices also contain sugars and acids Although we often associate them with a healthy diet, frequent consumption can put considerable strain on tooth enamel. Water remains the best choice for thirst and dental health.
- Wait a little before brushing after acidic drinks Lemonade, fizzy drinks, wine and citrus juices temporarily soften the surface of tooth enamel. Brushing immediately afterwards can cause further wear. It is much better to rinse your mouth with water first and wait around half an hour before brushing.
- Everyday habits also affect the appearance of teeth Coffee, black tea, red wine, strongly coloured drinks and smoking can gradually stain teeth. Regular professional oral hygiene helps remove surface deposits and maintain a naturally bright smile.
Finally, I would like to emphasise something I often tell patients in the practice. Teeth do not need a perfect diet, but balance. Good oral hygiene, thoughtful dietary habits and regular preventive check-ups are still the best combination for a healthy smile that will stay with you for many years.
